Abstract: An approximate analysis of the effects of confined fluid on the mass and damping present in high density spent fuel storage racks is performed. It is shown that inclusion of large displacement effects is required to yield realistic results for rack forces and pool floor slab forces. The theory is developed for square cell geometries, and a simple two degree of freedom numerical example is presented to illustrate the effects.
